Spirit of Place: Great Blue Heron

Out of their loneliness for each other
two reeds, or maybe two shadows, lurch
forward and become suddenly a life
lifted from dawn or the rain. It is
the wilderness come back again, a lagoon
with our city reflected in its eye.
We live by faith in such presences.

It is a test for us, that thin
but real, undulating figure that promises,
"If you keep faith I will exist
at the edge, where your vision joins
the sunlight and the rain: heads in the light,
feet that go down in the mud where the truth is."

Welcome to the evolving electronic home of

Broad Brook Books & Stuff.

In an uncertain economy, the standard entertainment can be a drain on our income as well as our security. But books already read and enjoyed are an inexpensive, enriching and green alternative to movies or video games.

So feel free to come by and browse, read, chat or just watch our resident great blue snatch trout from the brook.

Text Box: What do you do if you're an amateur adventurer and environmentalist who dreams of hiking the Appalachian Trail or saving the rainforest, but you can't quit your day job or abandon personal commitments? John Sheirer created his own project: From May 17, 2005 to May 16, 2006, he hiked the same trail in Somers, Connecticut, once a day, every day.
